Bridge Internal Grants Program

Sponsored by OSPRI, the Bridge Internal Grants Program provides funding to support faculty and staff in the pursuit of research, scholarship, creative activities, and community outreach projects.  These funding opportunities are designed to strengthen capacity and enhance the competitiveness of proposals for external funding.

Departmental approval is required for the Principal Investigator (PI) and all co-Principal Investigators (co-PIs) before any Bridge grant application will be considered eligible for review and support.

 

Bridge Internal Grants Program Funding Opportunities

 

Proposal Enhancement Grant (PEG):

 

The Proposal Enhancement Grant (PEG) provides funding for pilot studies, feasibility studies, or the collection of baseline data in support of externally funded grant applications. The PI must be a full-time faculty member. The program provides up to $5,000 per project, determined by need and justification.

Grant Details:

• Project Duration: up to 24 months
• Award Limit: 1 award per PI/PD every 3 years
• Application Deadline: October 15th
• Earliest Start Date: January 1st

 

New and Early-Career Faculty Exploratory Grant (NEFE):

 

The New and Early-Career Faculty Exploratory Grant provides seed funding to support the research, scholarship, and creative activities of new tenured or tenure-track faculty during their first five years of employment at UCM. This program is designed to support the development of a robust research and/or scholarly activity portfolio and enhance competitiveness for external funding opportunities. Funding may be used to initiate pilot projects, generate preliminary data, or advance creative and scholarly work that positions faculty for future grant submissions.

The program provides up to $5,000 per project, determined by need and justification.  Faculty are eligible to receive funding once through this program.

• Award Limit: 1 award per PI/PD
• Application Deadline: October 15th
• Earliest Start Date: January 1st

 

GRIT Grant:

 

The GRIT Grant is designed to strengthen the competitiveness of previously submitted extramural grant proposals that received favorable peer review but were not selected for funding. The GRIT Grant provides targeted funding to address reviewer comments and recommendations, refine proposal components, and generate additional data to improve the proposal for resubmission. The program provides up to $5,000, determined by need and justification. Award recipients are expected to resubmit the revised proposal to a federal, state or other external funding. agency during the current or following academic year.

Eligibility:

• Proposals must have received competitive scores and favorable review by an extramural grant review panel. Examples include but are not limited to the following:
  • NIH proposals that received an overall Impact/Priority Score of 40 or lower.
  • NSF proposals that received a majority of ratings of 鈥淕ood鈥� or above.
  • U.S. Department of Education proposals that received a score of 75% or higher of the total possible points or were designated as fundable but not funded due to budget limitations.
  • U.S. Department of Labor proposals that received a score of 75% or higher of the total possible points or were deemed competitive but not funded.
  • Proposals submitted to other external funders, evaluated on a case-by-case basis based on documented reviewer comments, recommendations, and evidence that the proposal is competitive and likely fundable upon revision.
• Applicants must include panel summaries or score documentation as part of the GRIT Grant application.

Graduate Student Scholarly Research Grant Program

The Graduate Student Scholarly Research Grant Program provides financial support for graduate student research, scientific inquiry, and creative activity across all academic disciplines.  Awards are made to faculty-sponsored graduate student investigators to assist with research-related expenses, including data collection, research supplies, materials, and equipment necessary to conduct the proposed research or creative activity.  Grant funds may be used only for research-related expenses.  Travel expenses associated with attending or presenting at professional meetings or conferences are not eligible for funding under this program, as they are supported through the Graduate Student Travel Scholarly Fund.

Eligibility:

UCM graduate students must be: 

1. Admitted to a graduate degree program
2. In good academic standing
3. Enrolled in the semester that the application is made
4. The student investigator responsible for the research described in the application

If a qualifying project is jointly conducted by two or more graduate students serving as co-investigators, each student may separately request funding to support the research activities.

Application Process: 

A complete application must include the following:

1. Proposal Document (maximum 5 pages, 12-point font, double-spaced, written for a non-technical audience) with the following sections (as applicable):

• Title of research project
• Background with brief literature review
• Problem statement or research hypothesis
• Methodology
• Survey instruments
• Works cited

2. Determination of Research (DOR) response - include a copy of the DOR email which states if your project required further review or not.
3. Approval Letter - IF your DOR indicated further review was required for your project, attach the approval letter from one of the following review committees:

• Institutional Review Board (IRB)
• Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee (IACUC)
• Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC)

4. Budget Worksheet - list specific supplies, resources, ordering information, and estimated pricing. Include any additional funding sources that will be used to complete this project.
5. Letter of Support, signed by the applicant鈥檚 graduate faculty advisor/research supervisor, confirming that:

• The proposed project has a clearly defined scope and research objectives;
• The methodology is appropriate to the research aims;
• The planned research activities are feasible and achievable within the proposed timeframe and available resources; and
• The faculty advisor commits to providing oversight for the project

All required documents must be combined into a single PDF file and submitted with the application form.

Funding is limited. Applications are accepted from August 1 to May 1 each year and are reviewed on a rolling basis, subject to availability of funds. Award amounts vary, with a maximum of $1,000 per project per fiscal year. Students may receive a maximum of two (2) awards during their graduate career at UCM.

Applicants will be notified of funding decisions by email. Grant funds may be used to cover eligible expenses incurred on or after the date the award recipient is notified of the funding decision.

Awarded funds must be expended by May 30 of the applicable fiscal year. Grant recipients are expected to present their research or creative activity at the annual UCM Scholar Symposium.

 

Reimbursement for Research Expenses:

Funding is limited to the amount specified in the award letter. Only expenses identified in the approved application are eligible for reimbursement.

Students must coordinate with their faculty advisor and academic department to purchase approved items. The academic department is responsible for completing and submitting the Graduate Student Research Reimbursement Request form.

The Office of Sponsored Programs & Research Integrity will reimburse academic departments only for pre-approved, prepaid project expenses. All reimbursement requests must be submitted by the academic department. Reimbursement to students by check, direct deposit, or any other direct payment method is not permitted.

Incomplete applications will be denied.
