The 欧美视频 (UCM) Gallery of Art and Design announces an intriguing
painting exhibition, 鈥淧rotruding Pigments,鈥 opening Monday, Oct. 5.
鈥淧rotruding Pigments鈥 is a solo exhibition featuring paintings by artist Sammie Jane
Hardewig, whose studio practice 鈥渉yper-fixates on the materiality of reclaimed house
paint.鈥
鈥淚 challenge (the paint) to redefine its intended purpose of covering, protecting
and elevating surfaces around us by using it to create three-dimensional forms,鈥 her
website biography states. 鈥淚鈥檓 interested in discovering how self-sufficient this
material can be while allowing material agency and the opportunity to fail or prevail.
I use reclaimed paints with unknown histories to ensure uncertainty and irregularity.
The skeletal armatures that coexist with the paint skins are inspired by bodily gestures,
daily observations from my surroundings, and/or a feeling.鈥
Hardewig earned a master鈥檚 in Visual Art and a Museum Studies Certificate at the University
of Kansas, and two bachelor鈥檚 degrees, Visual Art and Art History, from the University
of Nebraska鈥揕incoln. She has exhibited in numerous galleries across the Midwest. She
was awarded Best in Show for her 鈥淒ebut the New鈥 virtual exhibition with the Spencer
Museum of Art in Lawrence, Kansas, and third place in the eighth annual Midwest Open
at Woman Made Gallery in Chicago.
Hardewig lives in Marquette, Michigan. She is the collections curator for the DeVos
Art Museum at Northern Michigan University and the gallery technician for the Huron
Mountain Gallery Club at the Peter White Public Library.
The public is invited to stop by the gallery Sept. 28 to Oct. 2 to see the progress
